The Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Xiamen University

The Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters, Xiamen University was established in September 2008 under the direction of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) in order to take advantage of Xiamen University’s location in a special economic zone on the southeast cost of China facing Taiwan to build a comprehensive, internationally-oriented Southern Base for the promotion of Chinese language and culture.

To date, the Southern Base has trained over 8,000 international Chinese language teachers, administrative personnel, and various kinds of students, including Confucius Institute directors, Hanban-sponsored teachers, volunteer teachers, local teachers, education officials, primary and middle school principals, and college students as well as primary and middle students in the Summer/Winter Camps.

On December 7th, 2013, Mme. Liu Yandong, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, announced formally at the 8th Confucius Institute Conference that the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors for rotational training of directors and head teachers under the aegis of Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) would be established in Xiamen University. And on December 7th, 2014, Vice Premier Liu Yandong inaugurated the Academy at the opening ceremony of the 9th Confucius Institute Conference. Construction of the Academy buildings is in progress in the southwestern part of XMU Xiang'an Campus, covering an area of 34 hectares. It will provide over 60,000 square meters of floor-space, including teaching and training areas, offices, residential blocks, a catering service area, a leisure center, and cultural and sports facilities. On completion, it is expected to provide teaching and training facilities, accommodation, and a range of cultural and leisure activities for 800 to 1,000 people at the same time.

The prime function of the Academy for Confucius Institute Directors is the rotational training of 3,600 foreign education officials and CI directors per year, to ensure the trained and qualified personnel needed for the smooth and rapid development of Confucius Institutes around the world. The Academy is also intended to serve as a major base for cross-cultural exchanges and communication, providing high quality services for foreign scholars of Chinese as well as a center in China for staff of Confucius Institutes around the world.

The Office of Confucius Institute Affairs, Xiamen University

The Office of Confucius Institute Affairs, Xiamen University established in May 2011. The office was created specifically to manage Confucius Institute affairs and to bring the construction of Confucius Institutes under Xiamen University's comprehensive development plan. The office is determined to carry out to the full its specific role as a “comprehensive cultural exchange platform”, as enshrined in its motto of “Promoting World Culture”. The office is in charge of the selection and appointment of Chinese Directors for Confucius Institutes, full-time Chinese teachers and volunteer teachers. At the same time, it supports the variety of activities organized by Confucius Institutes and promotes exchanges and research cooperation between partner universities. Furthermore, the office not only carries out research into current developments and demand for Confucius Institutes, but also hosts meetings of the Board of the Council of Confucius Institute Headquarters and the Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes co-established by Xiamen University and so on, so as to ensure Xiamen University will achieve sustainable and high-level development for the promotion of Chinese language and culture around the world.

Xiamen University will do its utmost to develop the Confucius Institute as a platform for the dissemination of Chinese language, a showcase of Chinese culture, and a bridge for international cooperation and trade networks. By giving full play to the Confucius Institute’s unique advantage as a comprehensive cultural exchange platform, Xiamen University will continue to boost the people-to-people communication between China and different countries, promote exchanges and learning of various cultures, enhance the heart-to-heart communication of human beings, and strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between Chinese people and citizens of other countries.
