(On June 19, 2010, Mr. Xi Jinping, then Vice-President of the People’s Republic of China, attended and delivered a congratulatory speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington. )

The Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington (VUWCI) is a key part of the University’s engagement with China. Since the CI was launched by then Vice-President Xi Jinping in June 2010, it has hosted quite a few high-level delegations from China, has worked closely with the Chinese Embassy, and has hosted delegations from universities throughout China. The VUWCI has cooperated closely with Director-General Mme. Xu Lin and with Hanban to develop CI Program in Wellington and throughout New Zealand. The CI has strong support from both partner universities, with both the VUW Deputy Vice Chancellor and Xiamen University Vice President sitting on the CI Board. The Board’s chair sits on the New Zealand China Council Executive Board. Currently, the CI has 53 staff members – Director, Chinese Director, 1 Chinese teacher and 1 administrator, and 49 Mandarin Language Assistants. In 2015, 38 Mandarin Language Assistants undertook some 19,000 language classes to 12,442 primary, intermediate, high school ad tertiary students, which is a significant increase compared with those in 2014 (around 7000 students in 995 classs).
