(The plaque-unveiling ceremony for the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton was held on 31 October 2011. It was attended by H. E. the Chinese Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s Mr. Liu Xiaoming, and former British Ambassador to China Sir Leonard Appleyard, as well as Xiamen University President, Prof. Zhu Chongshi, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, Prof. Don Nutbeam, and the Education Minister-Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Tian Xiaogang and the Mayor of Southampton, Councillor Terry Matthews.)



The Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton was set up in partnership with Xiamen University. The agreement was signed on 25 May 2011 and it was officially launched on 31 October 2011.

The Confucius Institute now has 2 directors, 1 representing the University of Southampton and the other Xiamen University. Members of the CI include 2 Directors, 1 full-time administrative assistant, 4 Chinese teachers, 1 local tutor and 2 volunteer Chinese teachers.  

In 2015, the CI had 230 registered students, showing an increase of 26 % in enrolment as compared with the figure last year, which was 183. The total number of the CI’s registered students since its set-up is 833.
