From December 9thto 10th,the 2019 International Chinese Language Education Conference was held for the first time in Changsha, Hunan Province. With the theme of "Innovation and Development of International Chinese Education in the New Era", more than 1,000 representatives of Confucius Institutes and Chinese education institutions from more than 160 countries and regions attended the conference. Sun Chunlan, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Vice Premier of China, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote speech. Du Jiahao, Secretary of Hunan Provincial Party Committee, and Chen Baosheng, Minister of Education, delivered speeches at the opening ceremony, which was chaired by Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education. Zhang Rong, President of Xiamen University (XMU), was invited to be present at the conference, and he also attended the Confucius Institute Headquarters Council Roundtable and the 11thXMU Confucius Institute Partnership Workshop, among other activities.
During the conference, XMU was once again awarded the title of the “Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner”, which is an honor that XMU has won for the fifth time after 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2017. The Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, co-established by XMU, was awarded the title of "Global Advanced Confucius Institute".
At the Confucius Institute Headquarter Council Roundtable chaired by Tian Xuejun, Vice Minister of Education, Zhang Rong, President of XMU, delivered a speech in which he put forward constructive suggestions based on XMU's 13 years of practical exploration in the construction of Confucius Institutes. Chayaporn Wattanasiri, President of Mae Fah Luang University, Tony Browne, Chairman of the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington, and other leaders of the partner universities were also invited to chair the forums and workshops during the conference.
On the occasion of the 2019 International Chinese Education Conference, XMU held the 11th
XMU Confucius Institute Partnership Seminar in Changsha from December 7thto 8th. Nearly 40 people, including the leaders of the Southern Base of CI Headquarters and the Office of CI Affairs, the International Office of XMU, and the Overseas Education College, as well as the leaders of the XMU CI partner universities, the CI Council chairmen and Chinese and local CI directors, attended this workshop, and held discussions on the topics of “Exploration on Ways to Help the Confucius Institutes Serve the Disciplinary Construction of Partner Universities" and "Establishment of the Association of the Confucius Institute Partner Universities".
At the seminar, President Zhang Rong presented awards of “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence” and “Confucius Institute of the Year” and delivered a speech. In his speech, Zhang Rong praised the achievements made by 15 Confucius Institutes and extended his appreciation to them for their long-term support for the work of the Confucius Institutes. He pointed out that language is the basis of literature reading, the carrier of information exchange, and a tool for intellectual development, which can help people understand and communicate with each other. The Confucius Institutes, as the crystallization of the wisdom and painstaking efforts of people from all over the world, shoulder the mission of promoting Chinese teaching globally, and multicultural communication and have become an important bridge and link in promoting international and inter-school exchanges. Going forward, XMU will continue to cooperate with foreign universities in building a university community, promoting disciplinary construction, academic innovation, and connotation construction of Confucius Institutes, thus contributing its fair share to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
The Confucius Institute at Cardiff University, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Southampton won the title of the "Confucius Institute of the Year" presented by XMU. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng, Local Director of the Confucius Institute at San Diego State University, Eric Henry, Local Director of the Confucius Institute at the Saint Mary’s University, Huang Jianjun, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang University and Zhao Yezhu, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at Victoria University of Wellington were awarded the title of the “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence”.
While in Changsha, XMU also held CI council meetings with Stellenbosch University in South Africa, the University of Wroclaw in Poland, the University of Southampton in the UK, and Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand. At the council meeting with Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand, Zhang Rong, President of XMU, and Chayaporn Wattanasiri, President of Mae Fah Luang University, renewed the implementation agreement on the Confucius Institute Partnership.
Since the establishment of its first co-built Confucius Institute in 2006, XMU has always attached great importance to and vigorously engaged in the international promotion of Chinese language and the construction of the Confucius Institutes. In 2018, XMU further formulated the "Upgrading Plan for the International Promotion of the Chinese Language" to improve the quality of the international Chinese language Education and of the Confucius Institutes; XMU has co-built 15 Confucius Institutes and 46 Confucius Classrooms in 12 countries on 5 continents, more than any other “Double Tops” University that is engaged in the CI Partnership; it has won the honor of the “Outstanding Confucius Institute Chinese Partner” for 5 times, the “Confucius Institute of the Year” for 6 times, the “Confucius Classroom of the Year” for 3 times, the “Confucius Institute Individual Performance Excellence” for 8 times and it has a “Model Confucius Institute”. In the course of running Confucius Institutes, XMU has helped 10 partner universities to incorporate courses of Chinese language into their curriculums and led 5 partner universities to create a Chinese college / Chinese major. The quality of Chinese teaching in the XMU co-built Confucius Institutes has been widely recognized as excellent results have been achieved in the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), Chinese Proficiency Speaking Test (HSKK) and the "Chinese Bridge" Chinese Competition.
